on the island of santa cruz, we were treated to a visually stunning new year's eve. enrique, our to guide, explained that it is ecuadorian tradition to build effigies of the old year, and at midnight, everybody burns their effigy of the old year and sets off fireworks.
to greet the new year, you jump over the bonfire of the past year and into the future. despite creating some fairly toxic air, it was quite a beautiful tradition.
